What Sells in a Bait and Tackle Shop: The Opening Assortment
Ask ten new shop owners what they plan to stock and nine will say "a bit of everything." The shops that last do the opposite. Here is what actually moves across a saltwater bait and tackle counter, and how to buy it.
The rule: species first, size ladder second
Write down the six fish your customers actually catch in each season. Then, for each, stock the complete ladder of hook sizes, jig weights and leader tests that fish needs. A wall that runs from a #4 to a 12/0 in one hook style beats a wall with forty hook styles and half the sizes missing, because the customer who cannot find his size leaves and does not come back.

1. Terminal tackle: the profit center
Hooks, swivels, snaps, sinkers, split shot, beads and leader. Small, cheap, bought every trip, and nobody price-shops them. This is the highest-margin, fastest-turning shelf in the store. Circle hooks and octopus hooks in every size your species need; ball-bearing swivels for the trolling crowd; a full run of egg, pyramid and bank sinkers. Never let this shelf go empty.
2. Pre-tied rigs
Pompano rigs, bottom rigs, sabikis, shark rigs, chicken rigs, deep-drop rigs. They save the customer ten minutes of tying and they sell to the weekend angler who does not know how. Ready rigs turn especially well at pier, surf and bridge shops.
3. Bait
Live, frozen and cut. Bait is why the customer chose your shop over the big box: they cannot get shrimp, pinfish or fresh mullet there. It is low margin and high hassle, and it is the reason the tackle beside the register sells. Match your bait to your water and your season.
4. Jigs, spoons and lures
Jig heads in the local weights and colors, a few soft plastics, spoons for mackerel and blues, and the handful of hard baits your captains actually throw. Buy local colors deep and the national best-seller list shallow. Ask your supplier what sells at the shops nearest you.
5. Line and leader
Braid in the mainline tests for your water, mono for the older crowd, and fluorocarbon leader in every test from 15 to 80. Leader spools turn far faster than filler spools of mainline.
6. Cast nets
If your customers throw for bait, a net wall is one of the biggest tickets in the shop. Stock the common radius and mesh sizes for your bait, from a 4-foot beginner net to the 8- and 10-foot pro nets.
7. Rods, reels and combos: go slow
The most expensive inventory, the slowest turn, and the category your customer can buy online for less. Open with a tight range of combos at the price points your customers ask for and expand only when you know what sells.
8. The impulse rack
Pliers, dehookers, knives, bait scissors, sunscreen, bug spray, ice, koozies, a bucket. The stuff people forgot. Put it at the register.
How deep to buy
Buy the opening order at about 30 days of expected sales for the fast movers and less for everything else, then reorder weekly on what actually turned. Distributors with low reorder minimums make this possible; ones with big minimums push you to overbuy. Ask before you open the account.
Set the counter so it sells
- Put the size ladder on display. A branded counter display with every size visible outsells the same hooks in a drawer.
- Group by fish, not by manufacturer: a sheepshead section with the right hooks, weights and bait beats a hook wall sorted by brand.
- Post what is biting this week and what you sell to catch it.
- Keep the register area for rigs and terminal tackle, not for T-shirts.
