Offshore fishing punishes tackle in a way inshore never does. A 300-foot drop on the Gulf ledges means your rig is fighting current the whole way down, and a kingfish on a long troll will find every weak crimp you ever tied. The gear here is chosen for that: forged hooks that don't open, swivels rated well past the line you're using, and jigs with assist rigging already built to the drop.

Bottom fishermen working the Gulf reefs out of Sarasota, Destin, Venice and Port Aransas lean on the deep drop rigs and heavier vertical jigs. Trollers running the Atlantic from the Keys up through the Carolinas pull the cedar plugs and mahi feathers. Both crowds end up in the same terminal tackle drawer.
