Cable is the choice when the fish is big enough to roll. A shark that wraps itself in the leader will kink single strand wire into a weak point and snap it — braided cable simply bends and keeps its strength, because it flexes instead of taking a permanent set.
That flexibility also means the bait moves more naturally in the current than it does on stiff wire, which matters when you have rowed a bait out past the bar and it needs to sit there looking alive.
Heavier and more visible than single strand, so it is the rig for genuinely big fish rather than for finesse. When you are targeting bulls, hammerheads or anything during the fall mullet run on the Gulf and Atlantic beaches, this is the rig you want on the reel.
