Snapper are the reason light presentations exist offshore. They are notoriously line-shy and they inspect a bait before they eat it, especially in the clear water on the Gulf reefs and along the Atlantic edge in summer. Heavy leader and a clumsy rig gets looked at and refused all day long.

The answer is the lightest jig that still reaches the bottom and stays there. Fluorocarbon leader, sharp hooks, and enough weight to hold in the current but nothing more. When bites go quiet, dropping a size in both leader and jig weight usually turns them back on.

Tipping with a strip of bait is close to cheating — snapper will commit to a tipped jig they refused clean.
