A snap swivel is about speed on the water. Changing a sinker as the surf builds, swapping a whole pompano rig, or trying four different spoons to find the one they want — all of it happens in seconds instead of costing you a knot and six inches of leader each time.

That convenience is worth most on the terminal end of a surf or bottom rig, where you are changing lead weight through a tide rather than changing presentation.

Two habits worth keeping: buy a size rated well past your line, and close the snap fully every single time. A snap that looks closed but is not accounts for a genuinely startling share of lost fish.
