Braid gets the attention, but mono is still the correct answer in more saltwater situations than people admit. Its stretch is a feature: it absorbs the shock of a big head shake, a surf caster's hard launch, and a fish that surges boatside — the exact moments where zero-stretch braid pops a hook out or breaks off.

It is also far more forgiving on knots, cheap enough to respool without thinking about it, and it floats, which suits topwater work and keeps a surf rig from digging in.

Trollers run mono for the same reason: a fish hitting a trolled bait at speed needs somewhere for that energy to go. And as a leader it takes abrasion well at a fraction of the price of fluorocarbon when clarity is not the concern.
