The power swivel is the workhorse connection in saltwater. It is compact, it is strong for its size, and it is what most hand-tied rigs are built around — the joint between main line and leader on a pompano rig, a bottom rig or a shark leader.

Size selection trips people up. The instinct is to go big for strength, but an oversized swivel is a visible chunk of hardware sitting right above your bait and it will cost you bites from anything cautious. Pick the smallest swivel genuinely rated above your line, not the biggest one in the pack.
