There is a whole category of saltwater fish that will bite through any mono or fluorocarbon you own, cleanly, on the first contact — kingfish, Spanish and cero mackerel, barracuda, bluefish and sharks. Losing a fish to a cut-off is one thing; losing the fish and leaving a lure in it is worse.

Wire fixes it completely. The trade is visibility: wire is more obvious in clear water and will cost you bites from anything line-shy, which is why nobody runs it for snapper.

The practical answer most Gulf and Atlantic anglers land on is to keep both rigged. Run fluorocarbon until something cuts you off, then switch to wire and stay on the fish instead of donating tackle to them all afternoon.
