The octopus is the short-shank, wide-gap, slightly offset hook that disappears into a bait. That short shank is the point of it: less hardware showing means a more natural presentation, which is what gets you bit by fish that look hard at everything before committing.

The offset point does the other half of the job. It catches on the way out of the mouth rather than sliding, so it converts on the soft inhale-and-spit bite that defines mangrove snapper, sheepshead and pinfish-sized targets — fish that will taste a bait and reject it in under a second.

It is also the standard hook shape on round jig heads, which is why Hog Balls are built on one. Good all-round choice for live shrimp inshore and cut bait on the bottom.
