A ready rig buys you the thing you can never get back on a fishing trip, which is time on the bite. Bite windows around a tide change are short. Spending twenty minutes of one re-tying a leader in a rolling boat, or in the dark on a beach with cold hands, is how people miss the whole morning.

These are tied by hand on quality components — fluorocarbon where you need the leader to disappear in clear water, single-strand and cable wire where teeth are the problem. Weighted builds carry their own lead for the surf and current; non-weighted builds let you add exactly what the conditions call for.

Keep a few of each in the bag. They also make a beginner functional immediately.
