Sharks end the argument about leader material immediately. Mono and fluorocarbon of any test get cut in one shake of the head, so wire is not a preference here, it is the only thing that works.

Circle hooks are standard on these rigs and it is not only a conservation choice, though it is that — circle hooks are required for shore-based shark fishing in Florida. They also hook in the jaw hinge rather than the throat, which means a shark you can actually unhook and release, and a rig you get back.

Blacktips and spinners run the Gulf and Atlantic beaches through the warm months, with bulls and hammerheads following the mullet run in fall. Know your state rules before you fish — Florida requires a free shore-based shark permit.
