Grouper fishing is a race you usually lose. The fish eats, turns, and heads straight back into the rock — and if it gets there, the rig is gone and often the fish dies in the structure. Everything here is built around stopping that in the first three seconds: heavy leader, strong forged hooks, and no weak link anywhere in the system.

Two approaches work. Bait on a grouper rig with the drag locked down, lifting hard the moment it loads. Or slow pitch jigging, where a scooped jig fluttering down like a wounded baitfish triggers fish that are sitting tight and refusing to chase anything.

Use bank sinkers rather than pyramids on hard bottom. The tapered shape slides up and out of rock where a flat sinker wedges and takes the whole rig with it.

Circle hooks are legally required for reef fish in federal Gulf and South Atlantic waters. Check current seasons — gag, red and black grouper all close at different times.
