Sinker shape is a holding decision, not a weight decision. A pyramid digs into sand and holds a beach in moderate swell. A sputnik with its wire arms holds in surf that would roll a pyramid down the trough. An egg sinker is meant to move — it slides on the main line so a wary fish picks up the bait without feeling lead. A bank sinker is built to come free off rock and reef instead of wedging.

Carry the range. Surf conditions on the Gulf can go from a 2oz morning to a 6oz afternoon on the same tide, and the Atlantic beaches from Florida up through the Carolinas routinely need more lead than the Gulf side for the same depth.
