Collection: Pompano Jigs

Jigs sized and shaped for pompano — fished off the beach, from a pier, or cast to a visible school from a boat.

Jigging pompano is a different game from soaking bait on a rig, and on the right day it is far better. You are covering water instead of waiting on it. The retrieve is short sharp hops along the bottom with a pause on the fall, because pompano hit the drop almost every time.

Weight is dictated by the water, not the fish. You need just enough lead to hold the bottom and stay in contact through the sweep of the current. Too light and the jig washes down the beach; too heavy and it plows sand instead of hopping.

Tip with a piece of fresh shrimp or a sand flea and the strike rate goes up sharply. Whiting, permit and jacks all eat the same presentation.
