Fluorocarbon leader material through the pound-test range, for building your own rigs and for stepping down when fish get picky.

Fluorocarbon does two things mono cannot. It refracts light close to the same way water does, so it is far harder for a fish to see — the difference is real on snapper in clear Gulf water, on snook around a lit dock, and on any tarpon that has been fished to before. And it is significantly more abrasion resistant, which is what keeps you connected when a redfish wraps an oyster bar or a snook runs a barnacled piling.

It sinks, which helps a bait get down naturally, and it has less stretch than mono for better feel on a subtle bite.

Standard practice is a fluoro leader on a braid main line. Fish the lightest test you can get away with — that is usually the whole difference between a slow day and a good one.
