Mahi are the most cooperative offshore fish there is, and the whole game is finding them rather than convincing them. They are surface-oriented, aggressive and visual — they hold under anything floating, and once you get one to the boat the rest of the school will follow it in and eat almost anything you throw.

Which is why trolling feathers work so well. They are light, they swim high and fast in the spread, and they hold their action across a wide speed range so you can cover water looking for a weed line or a colour change.

Vary the lures across your spread rather than matching them. Different shapes swim at different depths and give you a genuine read on what the fish want that day.

The critical habit: keep a pitch bait ready. When a hooked mahi brings the school up, that window lasts a couple of minutes and it is where the trip is made or missed.

Work weed lines, floating debris and temperature breaks along the Gulf edge and the Atlantic stream. Blue and white in clean blue water, pink when it goes green or the light drops.
