Live bait dies from heat and lack of oxygen, usually faster than people expect on a Gulf Coast summer morning. A proper bait bucket buys you hours — and the difference between a lively pilchard and a dead one is very often the difference between a fish and no fish, because predators key hard on movement.

Storage matters for a duller but equally real reason: salt destroys tackle. Hooks left loose in a wet bag rust into a useless clump, and a rig you cannot find in time is a rig you do not fish.

Rinse everything with fresh water at the end of the day and gear that should last one season lasts five.
