White is the natural read — glass minnows, small pilchards and most of what yellowtail actually eat are pale and translucent. On clear water and flat calm days it is the least suspicious thing in the slick.

The eighth-ounce head holds position when there is current running over the reef, where a 1/16 would wash out before it got back to the fish.

Fish the lightest fluorocarbon you can stand. On yellowtail, leader diameter matters more than almost anything else.
