The difference between a sun hat and a cap is your ears and the back of your neck. A cap brim shades your face and leaves everything else exposed — and those are exactly the places that burn on a boat, because light comes up off the water as well as down from the sky.

That reflected light is the part people underestimate on a full day offshore. You get burned from below roughly as much as from above, and a cap does nothing about it.

The full brim also cuts glare across a wider angle than a cap does, which matters if you are trying to see fish rather than just stay comfortable. Wear it with polarized glasses.
