Compact tackle for fishing out of a kayak.
A kayak gets you into water a boat cannot reach and a wading angler cannot cover — skinny backwater, mangrove tunnels, oyster flats at low tide. It also gives you roughly two square feet of usable deck, which changes what tackle makes sense.
Three things matter more in a kayak than anywhere else.
Everything has to be small. A four-foot cast net is throwable while seated; an eight-footer is not. Light jig heads and a handful of soft plastics beat a full tackle box you cannot open.
Bait has to stay alive without a livewell. A sealed battery aerator in a small bucket is the standard solution, and it is what lets you fish live bait from a paddle craft at all.
Pre-tied rigs earn their keep. Re-tying a leader while a kayak drifts sideways into the mangroves is genuinely difficult. Ready rigs mean you clip on and keep fishing.
One practical note: leash or tether anything you would be upset to lose. Kayaks tip, and pliers do not float.
Kayaks are the best way to fish the Gulf backwater and marsh from Texas through Florida, and the Carolina sounds on the Atlantic side.
