Collection: Redfish Tackle

Weedless spoons, jig heads, popping corks and soft plastics — the lures that actually catch redfish.

Redfish are a structure fish that happens to live in shallow water. They sit tight to oyster bars, mangrove roots, dock pilings and the grass edge, and the entire problem of catching them is presenting a lure in those places without fouling it on every cast. That is why the weedless spoon has been the signature redfish lure for decades — a weed guard lets you drag it straight through the salad where the fish actually are.

Color matters more for reds than for most inshore fish. Gold is traditional and it earns that reputation in the tannic backwater of the Gulf coast and the Louisiana marsh, where silver simply disappears. Save silver for clear water on bright days.

The other reliable approach is a paddle tail on a sweeper jig head, worked slowly along a bar. The swept head keeps the bait tracking level rather than nosing into the bottom, and the thump of the tail is what a red finds on its lateral line in stained water.

Same tackle works from the Texas lagoons through the Louisiana marsh, around Florida, and up the Carolina sounds.
