Snapper are the reason light presentations exist offshore. They are notoriously line-shy and they inspect a bait before they eat it — especially in the clear water on the Gulf reefs and along the Atlantic edge in summer. Heavy leader and a clumsy rig gets looked at and refused all day while the boat next to you catches fish.

The answer is always to go lighter. The lightest jig that still reaches bottom and stays there, the lightest fluorocarbon leader you can stand. When the bite goes quiet, dropping leader diameter turns it back on more often than changing anything else does.

For yellowtail specifically, the trick is a 1/16 or 3/32oz jig drifting back in the chum slick at the same speed as the chum itself, so it looks like food rather than something attached to a line.

The octopus hook is what converts the bite. Short shank, wide gap, offset point — it catches on the way out of the mouth instead of sliding, which is exactly what you need on a fish that inhales and spits in under a second.
