Cast nets with the mesh opened up for mullet and other large baitfish.

Mullet nets are a specialist tool and the mesh size is the reason. A wider mesh passes water instead of pushing it, so the net sinks noticeably faster than a tight pilchard net of the same lead weight — critical when you are throwing on a mullet school that will not sit still and is often holding deeper than flats bait.

Wide mesh also means small bait swims straight through, which is the point. You are not trying to keep glass minnows. You are trying to get a net full of hand-sized mullet on the deck fast.

Live mullet is arguably the best big-fish bait on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts — snook, tarpon, cobia and big redfish all commit to one in a way they will not to a lure. During the fall mullet run, one good throw can make the entire trip.
